  • 1 (14-oz) block firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed and sliced into 4 steaks
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp plant-based butter (or regular butter if not vegan)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened almond milk (or any milk)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg (optional, for warmth)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for optional garlic-herb drizzle)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Press tofu for at least 20 minutes to remove excess water. Slice into 4 thick steaks.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk soy sauce, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and pepper. Marinate tofu steaks for 15–30 minutes.
  3. Place sweet potato cubes in a pot of salted boiling water. Cook for 15–20 minutes until fork tender. Drain well, then mash with butter, milk, salt, pepper, and a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg if using.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Pan-sear tofu steaks for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  5. In a small pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté minced garlic until fragrant (about 1 minute). Remove from heat and stir in parsley and lemon juice.
  6. Plate a generous scoop of mashed sweet potato. Place one tofu steak on top. Drizzle with garlic-herb sauce (optional) and garnish with extra parsley if desired.
